Maryland Homeschool Statistics

For the first time in 14 years, the total number of homeschool students in Maryland has actually decreased overall. For the reported 2006-07 academic year, statistics dipped 0.2% to 24,277 Maryland homeschool children. The Maryland State Department of Education does not attribute the decrease to any particular cause.

Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Garrett, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico, and Worcester counties reported up to 62% decreases in the number of homeschoolers. Somerset, Howard, Caroline, and Prince George's counties, on the other hand, had double-digit gains in the number of homeschool kids - ranging from 23% to 10% increases.

Prince George's county continues to lead the state in the most homeschoolers: 3,759. Kent county reports the fewest number of hoemschoolers at 68 children.

The 1997-98 school year saw the largest increase of homeschoolers in the state, jumping almost 23% to 13,665 children. Annual increases in the number of homeschool children have been less than 8% since 2002.

If you have a child with special learning needs, find out how the federal IDEA law applies to homeschoolers in the State of Maryland.

Many parents have successfully homeschooled children with learning differences. The first step, however, is to understand what your child's strengths and weaknesses are through a full educational assessment. Hand in Hand can help you with your educational journey. Find out more today.
