Maryland State High School Credit Requirements

To receive a diploma, all public high school students in Maryland* must earn 21 credits, including the following classes:

  • English: four credits
  • Math: three credits, including algebra and geometry
  • Science: three credits from earth, life or physical sciences in which laboratory experience is an integral component
  • Social Studies: three credits, including U.S. History, world history and government
  • Technology: one credit
  • Fine Arts: one credit in visual arts, music, theatre and/or dance.
  • Physical Education: one-half credit
  • Health: one-half credit

In addition, students must take either:
  • Foreign Language: two credits, or
  • Advanced Technology Education: two credits, or
  • Successfully complete a State-approved career and technology program

Certain special education students with an IEP are exempt from these graduation requirements.
