Maryland State High School
Credit Requirements
To receive a diploma, all public high
school students in Maryland* must earn 21 credits, including the following
classes:
- English: four credits
- Math: three credits, including algebra and geometry
- Science: three credits from earth, life or physical sciences in which
laboratory experience is an integral component
- Social Studies: three credits, including U.S. History, world history and
government
- Technology: one credit
- Fine Arts: one credit in visual arts, music, theatre and/or dance.
- Physical Education: one-half credit
- Health: one-half credit
In addition, students must take either:
- Foreign Language: two credits, or
- Advanced Technology Education: two credits, or
- Successfully complete a State-approved career and technology program
Certain special education students with an IEP are exempt from
these graduation requirements.
