Foreign Language Contests

  • Exploratory Latin Exam
    This is a national contest to expose children to classical stories and focus upon common elements of Latin in an age-appropriate way.
    Grade: 3rd-6th
    Deadline: March

  • National Latin Exam
    The National Latin Exam, sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, is a 40-question, multiple-choice test with a time limit of 45 minutes, offered to students on seven levels.
    Grade: 6th-12th
    Deadline: January

  • Le Grand Concours
    The National French Contest/Le Grand Concours is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Students of French in grades 1-12, in all 50 states and abroad, take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes.
    Grade: 1st-12th
    Deadline: Feb-Mar

  • National Greek Exam
    The National Greek Examination tests students in high schools and college in the US and around the world. The battery of six examinations consists of five Attic Greek exams (Introduction, Beginning, Intermediate, Prose, Tragedy) and a Homeric Greek exam (Odyssey).
    Grade: 9th-12th and college
    Deadline: January

  • National German Exam
    The National German Exam is administered each year to high school students of German. The exam provides individual diagnostic feedback and rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program. Outstanding students in Levels 2-4 can compete for a 4-week study trip to Germany.
    Grade: 9th-12th
    Deadline: Levels 2-4 in December, Level 1 in March

  • Olympiada of Spoken Russian
    State/Regional competitions take place throughout the U.S. from Feb-May. Participants may earn gold, silver, or bronze medals in recognition of their proficiency in Russian conversation, poetry recitation, and Russian civilization at various levels of study. In addition, every third or fourth year outstanding contestants at regional contests have the opportunity to participate in an international Olympiada contest that takes place in Moscow.
    Grade: 6th-12th

  • National Spanish Exam
    The National Spanish Examinations are standards-based assessments that measure both achievement and proficiency, but measure them separately.
    Grade: 6th-12th
    Deadline: January
