High School Programming
University of Maryland, College Park sponsors this contest where Maryland contestants participate in a three hour competition which will test their programming skills and problem solving abilities. Each high school is allowed to send one team of four contestants; contestants must be students currently attending that high school. Contests are generally held the second Saturday every March.

Balticon Young Writers' Contest
Sci-Fi and Fantasy writing contest for teens living in Maryland. Contestants shall be no younger than 14 and no
older than 18 years of age as of May 29 in the contest year and shall reside in, or attend school in Maryland. The
deadline for all submissions is March 31, in any given contest year.
Scripps Howard Spelling Bee
National competition held in late Spring. Local competition must be sponsored by a local newspaper.
National Youths Storytelling Showcase
The National Youth Storytelling Showcase is a unique opportunity for kids of all ages to participate in storytelling
at a local, regional, and national level. Students must be between the ages 7-17. Entries due in February.
Letters About Literature
Students write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre-- fiction or nonfiction, contemporary
or classic, explaining how that author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves.
There are three competition levels: Level I for children in grades 4 through 6; Level II for grades 7 and 8, and
Level III, grades 9 - 12. See rules for specific age and grade stipulations. Entries due in December.
2009 Young Writers’ Contest
Write an essay that examines the historical debate over the benefits and disadvantages of adopting the First Amendment. The author of the story must be between the ages of 12 and 18 by mid-February. Entries due in February.
Maryland Colonial Society Essay Contest
Sponsored by the Maryland Archives, high school students research a write an essay on a yearly theme. Entries due in March.
Crazy 4 math Contest
Describe how you use math in any activity you love to do — a sport, game, craft, hobby, or anything else. Contestants must be under 18 years of age. Entries due in July.
The American Mathematics Competitions
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) is dedicated to the goal of strengthening the mathematical capabilities
of our nation’s youth. Any student 14.5 years of age or younger on the day of the contest, and not enrolled in
grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 or equivalent may compete. Must register by November.
Prepare for the AMC with 325 actual test problems from over the years.

Math League’s Homeschool Contest
Math League's Homeschool contests are provided to homeschoolers for a fun, interesting educational opportunity. The Math League has Math Contests for Grades 4 through 8, High School Students, and Algebra 1 students.
Kids Philosophy Jam
Kindergartner through 12th graders are asked to write, create poetry, music or artwork regarding a
philosophical question posed each year. Homeschoolers and special needs children are encouraged to
enter. Deadline is the beginning of February
Engineering Challenge
Sponsored by the Baltimore Museum of Industry, the Engineering Society of Baltimore, the Technology Education Association of Maryland and the TIME Center at the Community College of Baltimore County, students from 1st - 12th grade can compete in a variety of long term engineering problem solving contests such as building a maglev train.
International Young Eco-Hero Awards Program

Cybermission
eCYBERMISSION challenges you to explore how science, math and technology work in your world. Students must be
enrolled in either 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade at a U.S.-based public or private school, a Entries due in February.
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)—the world's largest pre-college science competition—provides an opportunity for the best young scientists from around the globe to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge science projects, and compete for over $4 million in awards and scholarships. Any student in grades 9-12 and under the age of 21 is eligible to compete.
