Homeschoolers may sign up and take the ACT test at any age. To take the ACT as a homeschooler, you must obtain a copy of the ACT registration booklet. You can do this by going to your local public high school's guidance office and requesting a copy from the secretary. Or, you can call ACT, Inc and ask that they mail you one. If your homeschooler is over 13, you may also register online.

The ACT is offered one Saturday most months between September and June. Not all schools offer the ACT during every test date. Check the official ACT site or the registration booklet for exact dates and locations.

Students must arrive at the test site before 8:00 a.m. All registered students MUST have a photo ID, such as a driver's license, a passport, or a state-issued ID. State IDs can be obtained at the Department of Motor Vehicles and cost about $5 in Maryland. The test lasts until around noon if you do not take the writing portion. Otherwise, expect the test to last until around 1:00 p.m.

What's the Difference?

ACT
  • Achievement test that measures what a student has learned
  • Subtests: English, Math, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing section
  • Score based on number of correct answers. No penalty for guessing
SAT
  • Aptitude test that measures reasoning and verbal abilities
  • Subtests: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing
  • Score adjusted for the number of wrong answers given
Parents are not allowed in the test rooms. Students should check their registration material to be sure of what they may and may not bring into a test room, including the type of calculator that is allowed for the math portion. Students can bring snacks, but they will be left outside the door until there is a break.

As of September 2012, the ACT costs $35 for the non-writing test and $50.50 if you elect to take the ACT Plus Writing. Additional fees apply for late registration and registration by phone..

Register for the ACT directly with ACT, Inc.
