The PSAT

The Preliminary SAT is a shortened, practice test for the SAT. Most students take the PSAT in their sophmore and junior years. Students scoring high enough on the PSAT may qualify for National Merit Scholarships. Contact your state's local Higher Education Commission for more information on homeschool eligibility for these scholarships. Colleges do not look at PSAT scores.

The PSAT is offered only one Wednesday and one Saturday in October each year. Homeschoolers may sign up to take the test, but you are advised to contact your local high school in the Spring in order to make sure the test is ordered for your child. The PSAT currently costs $13.

The PSAT Homeschool code is 992199 for Maryland; 993999 for Pennslyvania; 994799 for Virginia; and 990999 for Washington, D.C.

The SAT

Homeschoolers may sign up and take the SAT test at any age. To take the SAT as a homeschooler, you must obtain a copy of the SAT registration booklet. You can do this by going to your local public high school's guidance office and requesting a copy from the secretary. Or, you can call College Board and ask that they mail you one. If your homeschooler is over 13, you may also register online.

The SAT is offered one Saturday most months between October and June. Not all schools offer the SAT during every test date. Check the official SAT site or the registration booklet for exact dates and locations. College Board offers a few Sunday test dates for students who cannot take the test on Saturdays due to religious reasons.

Students must arrive at the test site before 8:00 a.m. All registered students MUST have a photo ID, such as a driver's license, a passport, or a state-issued ID. State IDs can be obtained at the Department of Motor Vehicles and cost about $5 in Maryland. The test lasts until around 1:00 p.m.

Parents are not allowed in the test rooms. Students should check their registration material to be sure of what they may and may not bring into a test room, including the type of calculator that is allowed for the math portion. Students can bring snacks, but they will be left outside the door until there is a break.

The SAT currently costs $45. Additional fees apply for late registration, registration by phone, and stand-by registration on the day of the exam. College Board offers fee waivers to homeschoolers who meet income eligibility requirements. Talk with your local high school's guidance counselor for more information on obtaining a waiver.
